Noun plural

How to form the plural of Spanish nouns

what is it?

The plural of a noun refers to more than one person, place, or thing. In Spanish, plurals are formed by adding a suffix — either -s or -es — to the singular noun. The choice of suffix depends on the final sound of the singular form. One spelling change also applies: nouns ending in -z change that letter to -c before adding -es.

when to use it

  • Use the plural whenever you refer to more than one noun: two books, several cities, many countries.

  • Use the plural after quantity words such as muchos, varios, tres, and after the plural articles los and las.

  • Adjectives and articles that accompany the noun must also agree in plural form — but that agreement is covered in the adjective agreement topic.

formation

There are three rules, applied in order based on the singular ending.

  • Rule 1 — ends in a vowel: add -s. This covers most nouns.

  • Rule 2 — ends in a consonant: add -es. This includes nouns ending in -l, -r, -n, -d, etc.

  • Rule 3 — ends in stressed -í or -ú: add -es. Nouns such as país (ends in a stressed vowel followed by -s) also take -es because the final -s is part of a stressed syllable.

Spelling change: Nouns ending in -z change z → c before adding -es: lápiz → lápices. This preserves the original /s/ sound.

examples in context

Conozco tres países interesantes.
I know three interesting countries.
país ends in a stressed syllable with -s, so the plural is países (not *paiss or *país).
Hay muchas ciudades grandes en España.
There are many large cities in Spain.
ciudad ends in a consonant (-d), so -es is added: ciudades.
Los lápices están en la mesa.
The pencils are on the table.
lápiz ends in -z; the z changes to c before -es: lápices.
Hay dos árboles en el jardín.
There are two trees in the garden.
árbol ends in the consonant -l, so the plural is árboles.

common pitfalls

  • Adding only -s to consonant-final nouns. Nouns that end in a consonant require -es, not just -s. Write ciudades, not «ciudads».

  • Leaving país unchanged in the plural. Although país ends in a vowel letter, the final syllable is stressed and ends in -s, so it takes -es. Write los países, not «los país».

  • Forgetting the z → c spelling change. Before -es, a final -z must become -c. Write lápices, not «lapizes».
