what is it?
Pekiştirme is a word-formation process in Turkish that intensifies an adjective by attaching a specially built prefix to the front of the original stem. The result — called a pekiştirmeli sıfat (intensified adjective) — means something like "very" or "completely", but the intensification is built directly into the word rather than expressed by a separate adverb. For example, beyaz (white) becomes bembeyaz (snow-white / pure white), and yeni (new) becomes yepyeni (brand-new). The intensified forms are fixed, dictionary-listed words — they are not generated freely by a productive rule.
when to use it?
Use the reduplicated form when you want to express the highest or most complete degree of an adjective's meaning. The contexts below are the most common.
Describing colour at full intensity. Colour adjectives are the most frequent hosts: kıpkırmızı, masmavi, simsiyah, yemyeşil.
Emphasising a state as total or absolute. Non-colour adjectives also take the prefix when the meaning is "completely" or "utterly": bomboş (completely empty), apaçık (wide open / perfectly clear).
Spoken and written registers alike. These forms are neutral in register — equally natural in everyday speech and in writing.
Only with adjectives that have a listed reduplicated form. Not every adjective has an established pekiştirmeli form. If a form does not exist in the dictionary, use çok instead.
formation
The prefix is built from the first consonant + first vowel of the stem, followed by one of four fixed consonants: p, s, r, or m. This prefix is then placed directly before the full stem.
Vowel-initial stems always take p. When the stem begins with a vowel, there is no initial consonant to copy, so the prefix is always vowel + p: açık → ap-açık → apaçık. For consonant-initial stems, the connecting consonant (p/s/r/m) is lexically fixed and must be memorised per word.
| stem | prefix | reduplicated form | meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| beyaz | bem- | bembeyaz | snow-white |
| kırmızı | kıp- | kıpkırmızı | bright red |
| mavi | mas- | masmavi | deep blue |
| siyah | sim- | simsiyah | jet black |
| yeşil | yem- | yemyeşil | vivid green |
| yeni | yep- | yepyeni | brand-new |
| boş | bom- | bomboş | completely empty |
| açık | ap- | apaçık | wide open / perfectly clear |
Notice that the connecting consonant differs across words — m for bembeyaz and bomboş, p for kıpkırmızı and yepyeni, s for masmavi. There is no phonetic rule that predicts which consonant applies — each form must be learned as a whole.

common pitfalls
Trying to predict the connecting consonant. The consonant (p, s, r, or m) is not determined by any phonetic rule for consonant-initial stems. bembeyaz uses m, kıpkırmızı uses p, simsiyah uses m, yemyeşil uses m. Each form is lexicalised and must be memorised individually.
Using simple repetition instead of the prefix. Repeating the adjective (*beyaz beyaz) does not produce an intensifier in Turkish — it creates a different effect (distributive or manner). The correct intensified form is bembeyaz.
Adding çok or en to a reduplicated form. The prefix already encodes the "very / completely" meaning. Saying *çok bembeyaz or *en yepyeni is redundant and unnatural. Use either the reduplicated form alone or çok + plain adjective — not both.
Assuming consonant-initial stems can freely choose any connecting consonant. Only vowel-initial stems follow a fixed rule (always p). For consonant-initial stems there is no free choice — the connecting consonant is fixed per word. Inventing a form that does not exist in the dictionary (e.g. *bepbeyaz) will sound wrong to native speakers.
