what is it?
German builds new words systematically by attaching suffixes (endings added to a base) and prefixes (elements added before a base) to existing stems, and by joining two nouns with a linking element — most commonly the Fugen-s — when forming compounds. These processes are productive: once you know the rules, you can form and decode thousands of words you have never seen before. This page covers the most frequent patterns at B2 level: noun suffixes -ung / -heit / -keit / -schaft / -nis, negating prefixes un- / miss-, adjective suffixes -lich / -ig / -isch / -bar / -los / -voll / -frei, the adverbial suffix -weise, and the Fugen-s in compound nouns.
when to use it
Turning verbs or adjectives into abstract nouns: use -ung on a verb stem (die Bedeutung, die Lösung), or -heit / -keit on an adjective (die Freiheit, die Freundlichkeit).
Expressing group membership or relationships: use -schaft (die Freundschaft, die Gesellschaft) or -nis for states and results (das Ergebnis, die Kenntnis).
Negating or reversing a meaning: prefix un- negates adjectives and nouns (unfreundlich, das Unglück); miss- signals a faulty or wrong action (das Missverständnis, missachten).
Deriving adjectives from nouns or verbs: -lich and -ig add a general quality (freundlich, sonnig); -isch often marks origin or manner (spanisch, kindisch); -bar means «capable of being …» (vermeidbar, lesbar); -los means «without» (arbeitslos); -voll means «full of» (wundervoll); -frei means «free from» (zuckerfrei).
Forming sentence adverbs: add -weise to an adjective (glücklicherweise, normalerweise) to comment on the whole sentence.
Linking elements in compound nouns: the Fugen-s appears between the first and second element of many compounds, especially when the first element ends in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ling, -ion, -tät, or in certain other fixed combinations (Arbeit → Arbeitszimmer, Liebe → Liebeslied).
formation
The tables below summarise the most productive patterns. Nouns formed with these suffixes are always feminine unless otherwise noted.
| suffix | base type | example base | derived noun | meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| -ung | verb stem | lösen | die Lösung | solution |
| -ung | verb stem | bedeuten | die Bedeutung | meaning |
| -heit | adjective (not in -lich/-ig) | frei | die Freiheit | freedom |
| -heit | adjective (not in -lich/-ig) | krank | die Krankheit | illness |
| -keit | adjective in -lich or -ig | freundlich | die Freundlichkeit | friendliness |
| -keit | adjective in -lich or -ig | einig | die Einigkeit | unity |
| -schaft | noun / adjective | Freund | die Freundschaft | friendship |
| -nis (das/die) | verb or adjective stem | ergeben | das Ergebnis | result |
| suffix | base type | example base | derived adjective | meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| -lich | noun or verb | Freund | freundlich | friendly |
| -ig | noun | Hunger | hungrig | hungry |
| -isch | noun (origin/manner) | Kind | kindisch | childish |
| -bar | verb stem | vermeiden | vermeidbar | avoidable |
| -los | noun | Arbeit | arbeitslos | unemployed |
| -voll | noun | Wunder | wundervoll | wonderful |
| -frei | noun | Zucker | zuckerfrei | sugar-free |
| prefix | effect | example base | derived word | meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| un- | negation (adjective) | freundlich | unfreundlich | unfriendly |
| un- | negation (noun) | Glück | das Unglück | misfortune |
| miss- | faulty / wrong action | verstehen | das Missverständnis | misunderstanding |
| miss- | faulty / wrong action | achten | missachten | to disregard |
Adverbial -weise: attach -erweise to the base adjective (glücklich → glücklicherweise, normal → normalerweise). The result is an invariable sentence adverb.
Fugen-s: insert -s- between the two parts of a compound when the first element ends in a suffix such as -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät, -ling, or in many other lexically fixed cases: Arbeitszimmer, Liebeslied, Geburtstagsfeier. There is no single rule that predicts every case; high-frequency compounds must be learned individually.

common pitfalls
Choosing -heit instead of -keit after -lich or -ig: the form «*Freundlichheit» is wrong. The rule is straightforward: if the adjective already ends in -lich or -ig, use -keit: freundlich → die Freundlichkeit, einig → die Einigkeit. Reserve -heit for adjectives that do not end in those suffixes: frei → die Freiheit.
Dropping the Fugen-s: «*Arbeitzimmer» omits the obligatory linking element. When in doubt about whether a Fugen-s is needed, check a dictionary — but as a working rule, first elements ending in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft almost always take one: Wohnungstür, Freiheitskampf, Freundschaftsring.
Confusing -lich and -ig pairs with distinct meanings: some adjective pairs look similar but mean different things. freundlich (friendly, of behaviour) vs. freundig (joyful, enthusiastic — used mainly in compounds such as kinderfreudig); täglich (daily, recurring) vs. tägig (lasting … days, used in compounds: dreitägig). Do not swap the suffixes: the meaning changes or the word becomes non-standard.
The Fugen-s is not a genitive marker and carries no grammatical meaning — it is purely a phonological or historical linking element. Do not confuse it with the genitive -s of nouns.
