Reason clauses with -DIğI / -(y)AcAğI için

Expressing "because" through nominalised verb clauses

what is it?

In Turkish, one of the main ways to express a reason («because …») is to turn the verb of the reason clause into a noun phrase using the participle suffixes -DIğI (past / present cause) or -(y)AcAğI (future cause), followed by the postposition için («for / because of»). The participle carries a possessive suffix that agrees with the subject of the subordinate clause — for example, geldiğ-im için («because I came») vs. geldiğ-i için («because he/she came»). This construction is the standard spoken and written alternative to the conjunction çünkü; the two are never used together in the same clause.

when to use it

  • Stating the reason for a past or present situation. Use -DIğI için when the cause has already happened or is currently true: hasta olduğum için gelemedim («I couldn't come because I was ill»).

  • Stating the reason for a future action. Use -(y)AcAğI için when the cause is something that will happen or will be true: bu para yetmeyeceği için borç isteyeceğim («as this money won't be enough, I'll ask for a loan»).

  • When the reason clause precedes the main clause. The reason clause with -DIğI / -(y)AcAğI için normally comes before the main verb, following Turkish's head-final word order.

  • Formal writing. In more formal registers, -DIğIndAn (dolayı) is a close equivalent. The -DIğI için construction is neutral in register and suits both spoken and written Turkish.

formation

The suffix -DIğI is a verbal noun (action nominal) suffix. Its vowel follows four-way vowel harmony (-dığı / -diği / -duğu / -düğü), and the initial consonant voices to d after a vowel or voiced consonant, and stays t after a voiceless consonant. A possessive suffix is then added to agree with the subject of the subordinate clause, and the postposition için follows.

2nd pl.-(i)nizgeldiğiniz içinbecause you (pl.) came
3rd pl.-(s)i / -lerigeldikleri içinbecause they came

For a future cause, replace -DIğI with -(y)AcAğI and add the same possessive endings: gel-eceğ-im için («because I will come»), yet-meyeceğ-i için («because it will not be enough»). The buffer consonant y appears when the stem ends in a vowel.

examples in context

Bana kızdığın için öyle söylüyorsun.
You're saying that because you're angry with me.
2nd sg. possessive on -DIğI: kız-dığ-ın için. The subject of the reason clause («you») is encoded by the possessive suffix, not by a separate pronoun.
Yağmur yağdığı için maç ertelendi.
The match was postponed because it rained.
3rd sg. possessive: yağ-dığ-ı için. «Yağmur» is the subject of the subordinate clause; the main clause subject is different («the match»).
Hasta olduğum için gelemedim.
I couldn't come because I was ill.
1st sg. possessive: ol-duğ-um için. Both clauses share the same subject («I»), so the possessive is 1st sg.
Bu para yetmeyeceği için borç isteyeceğim.
As this money won't be enough, I'll ask for a loan.
Future cause: yet-meyeceğ-i için (3rd sg.). The negation -me- is inserted before -(y)AcAğI in the usual position.

common pitfalls

  • Attaching için directly to a finite verb. Learners sometimes write geç kaldım için, treating için like a conjunction that follows a normal past-tense verb. Turkish does not allow this. The verb must be nominalised first: geç kaldığım için («because I was late»).

  • Dropping the possessive agreement. Writing geldiği için when the subject is «I» gives the wrong meaning (it reads as «because he/she came»). The possessive must match the subject of the subordinate clause: geldiğim için for 1st sg., geldiğin için for 2nd sg., and so on.

  • Doubling the reason marker with çünkü. A sentence like Çünkü hasta olduğum için gelemedim mixes two different reason strategies. çünkü is a finite conjunction used after the main clause (Gelemedim, çünkü hasta oldum.), while -DIğI için is a nominalised subordinate clause that precedes the main verb. Use one or the other, never both.

A quick self-check: before için, you should always see a possessive suffix (-ım / -ın / -ı / -ımız / -ınız / -ları) attached to the participle. If you see a plain past-tense or present-tense ending immediately before için, the form is wrong.
