Concessive "although / despite"

-DIğI hâlde, -mAsInA rağmen, and -A rağmen

what is it?

Concessive clauses express a contrast: something happens despite or although a competing fact. Turkish has three main structures for this: -DIğI hâlde (verb-based, no case suffix on hâlde), -mAsInA rağmen / karşın (verb-based, dative required), and noun + dative + rağmen / karşın (noun-based). All three introduce a subordinate clause or noun phrase whose content is acknowledged but overridden by the main clause.

when to use it

  • -DIğI hâlde — use when the concessive clause has its own subject (marked with genitive) or shares the subject with the main clause, and you want a formal or written register. The concessive fact is typically an expectation or obligation that was not met.

  • -mAsInA rağmen / karşın — use when the concessive element is a verbal action or state. rağmen and karşın are postpositions that govern the dative case, so the nominalised verb must take the dative suffix -A before them.

  • noun + -A rağmen / karşın — use when the concessive element is a plain noun (e.g. an illness, the weather, the rules). The noun takes the dative suffix directly before rağmen or karşın.

Both rağmen and karşın are interchangeable in meaning. karşın is slightly more formal and literary; rağmen is more common in everyday speech and writing.

formation

Structure 1: -DIğI hâlde

Take the verb stem and add the verbal noun suffix -DIK (past/present reference) or -AcAK (future reference), then a possessive suffix agreeing with the subject of the concessive clause, then the uninflected word hâlde. hâlde takes no case suffix of its own.

bil--diği + hâldebildiği hâldealthough he knows
gel--eceği + hâldegeleceği hâldealthough he will come
yap--madığı + hâldeyapmadığı hâldealthough he does not do

Structure 2: -mAsInA rağmen / karşın

Take the verb stem and add the negative-style nominal suffix -mA (action noun), then a possessive suffix, then the dative -nA, then rağmen or karşın. The possessive reflects the subject of the concessive clause.

Structure 3: noun + dative + rağmen / karşın

Attach the dative suffix -A (or -nA after a possessive) directly to the noun, then add rağmen or karşın as a postposition.

examples in context

Yardım etmesi gerektiği hâlde hiçbir şey yapmadı.
Although he should have helped, he did nothing.
-DIğI hâlde with a 3sg possessive on gerek-; hâlde carries no case suffix.
Kötü şeyler yapmış olmasına rağmen onu severim.
Despite her having done bad things, I like her.
-mAsInA rağmen: the action noun olma takes 3sg possessive (-sı) then dative (-na) before rağmen.
Hastalığına rağmen çalışıyor.
She works in spite of her illness.
Plain noun with 3sg possessive + dative + rağmen; no verbal nominalisation needed.
Her şeyi bildiği hâlde sessiz kaldı.
Although she knew everything, she stayed silent.
-DIğI hâlde expressing a known fact that was not acted upon.
Çok yorgun olmasına karşın toplantıya katıldı.
Despite being very tired, she attended the meeting.
karşın as an alternative to rağmen; register is slightly more formal.

common pitfalls

  • Omitting the dative before rağmen / karşın. Both postpositions govern the dative. Writing olması rağmen is ungrammatical; the correct form is olmasına rağmen. Always check that the nominalised verb (or noun) carries -A / -nA before these postpositions.

  • Dropping the possessive suffix on -DIK hâlde. The verbal noun in -DIK must agree with the subject of the concessive clause via a possessive suffix. gerek hâlde or gerektiği hâlde without the possessive is not standard. The correct form is gerektiği hâlde (3sg possessive -i after the -DIK suffix).

  • Contaminating hâlde with için. Learners sometimes blend the concessive and causal constructions, producing gerektiği için hâlde. These are two separate postpositional phrases: -DIğI için means «because», while -DIğI hâlde means «although». They cannot be combined.

A quick self-check: after rağmen or karşın, scroll left and confirm the preceding word ends in a dative suffix (-a, -e, -na, -ne). If it does not, the sentence is ungrammatical.
