Rather than

-mAktAnsA, -AcAğInA / -AcAğI yerde

what is it?

Turkish has three main frames for expressing «rather than» or «instead of». At A2 you met -mAk yerine (infinitive + yerine). At B2 two additional frames become important: -mAktAnsA (verbal noun in ablative + conditional particle ise, contracted to -sA) and -AcAğInA / -AcAğI yerde (future participle in dative, or followed by yerde). All three attach to the rejected alternative — the action the speaker is advising against or setting aside — while the preferred action follows in the main clause.

when to use it

  • -mAktAnsA is used when the rejected alternative is an ongoing or habitual action. It carries a mild sense of «if one is going to do X, it would be better to do Y instead» and is common in spoken and written registers alike.

  • -AcAğInA (future participle + dative -A) is used when the speaker is reacting to something the subject is about to do or is in the process of doing. The dative signals the rejected outcome. It is more direct and often carries a tone of mild reproach or practical advice.

  • -AcAğI yerde (future participle + yerde) is a close synonym of -AcAğInA but slightly more formal. Yerde here means «in place of» and is not the locative of yer (place/floor) in its literal sense.

  • All three frames require the subject of the rejected action and the preferred action to be the same person. When subjects differ, use yerine with a noun phrase instead.

formation

-mAktAnsA is built in three steps: verbal noun suffix -mAk + ablative -tAn + conditional clitic -sA (contracted from ise). Vowel harmony applies throughout.

verb stemoutput formmeaning
bekle-beklemektenserather than waiting
git-gitmektenserather than going
otur-oturmaktansarather than sitting
oku-okumaktansarather than reading

-AcAğInA is built from the future participle -AcAk + possessive suffix agreeing with the subject + dative -A. The possessive is 2nd-person singular (-ın/-in/-un/-ün) when addressing someone directly, or 3rd-person (-ı/-i/-u/-ü) in third-person statements.

otur-oturacağınainstead of you sitting
bekle-bekleyeceğineinstead of you waiting

-AcAğI yerde uses the same future participle with a 3rd-person possessive (-AcAğI) followed by the fixed word yerde. The possessive does not take the dative here; yerde itself carries the locative meaning.

common pitfalls

  • Using -DIK instead of -AcAK. The frames -AcAğInA and -AcAğI yerde require the future participle -AcAk, not the past/evidential participle -DIk. Writing ağladığına instead of ağlayacağına changes the meaning entirely — ağladığına means «given that you cried / to the fact that you cried», not «instead of crying».

  • Dropping -sA from -mAktAnsA. The conditional clitic -sA is not optional. beklemekten alone is just the ablative of the verbal noun («from waiting») and does not carry the «rather than» meaning. The full form beklemektense is required.

  • Mixing the two future-participle frames. Do not combine elements of the two frames. -AcAğInA yerine and -AcAğI yerine are not standard. Use either -AcAğInA (dative, no yerine) or -AcAğI yerde (3rd-person possessive + yerde, no dative), but not a hybrid of the two.
