Reflexive & reciprocal pronouns

kendi and birbiri

what is it?

Kendi is the Turkish reflexive pronoun, covering three related uses: as a reflexive object («myself», «yourself», etc.), as an emphatic («I did it myself»), and as an adjectival modifier meaning «own» («my own house»). It always takes a possessive suffix to agree with the subject, and then takes whatever case the sentence requires. Birbiri is the reciprocal pronoun, meaning «each other» or «one another». It also takes possessive and case suffixes to show who is involved and what role «each other» plays in the clause. Neither pronoun relies on a special verb suffix — the verb stays in its ordinary form.

when to use it

  • Reflexive object — when the object of the verb refers back to the subject: «I saw myself», «she hurt herself». Use kendi + possessive + accusative (or whichever case the verb takes).

  • Emphatic «self» — when you want to stress that the subject acted without help: «I did it myself», «she cooked it herself». The pronoun is in the nominative (no case suffix) and typically sits just before the verb.

  • Adjectival «own» — when kendi modifies a noun to mean «one's own»: kendi + noun + possessive. The possessive goes on the noun, not on kendi.

  • «By oneself» (kendi kendine) — the doubled form kendi kendine / kendi kendim means «on one's own», «without help», «to oneself».

  • Reciprocal «each other» — when two or more participants act on one another. Use birbiri + possessive + case. The possessive reflects the subject's person/number; the case reflects the verb's requirement.

formation

Both pronouns follow the same principle: pronoun stem → possessive suffix → case suffix. The table below shows the full set of kendi forms in the nominative (emphatic) and accusative (reflexive object). Other cases follow the same pattern.

personemphatic (nominative)reflexive object (accusative)
1st sg.kendimkendimi
2nd sg.kendinkendini
3rd sg.kendisikendisini
1st pl.kendimizkendimizi
2nd pl.kendinizkendinizi
3rd pl.kendilerikendilerini

For the dative, add -(y)e / -(y)a after the possessive: kendime, kendine, kendisine, etc. For the adjectival use, kendi is uninflected and the possessive goes on the following noun: kendi ev-im («my own house»).

The birbiri forms most common at A2 are shown below.

formcasemeaning
birbiriniaccusativeeach other (direct object)
birbirinedativeto each other
birbirindenablativefrom each other
birbiriyleinstrumentalwith each other
birbirimizi1st pl. + accusativeeach other (we…)
birbirinizi2nd pl. + accusativeeach other (you…)

The base form birbiri already contains a 3rd-person possessive (-i). When the subject is 1st or 2nd person, replace that possessive: birbirimiz-, birbiriniz-, then add the case suffix.

examples in context

Kendimi aynada gördüm.
I saw myself in the mirror.
Reflexive object: kendi + 1st sg. possessive (-m) + accusative (-i) → kendimi. The verb is ordinary past tense.
Bunu kendim yaptım.
I did this myself.
Emphatic use: kendim is in the nominative — no case suffix. It stresses that no one else helped.
Kendi evimde yaşıyorum.
I live in my own house.
Adjectival «own»: kendi is uninflected; the possessive (-im) and locative (-de) go on the noun ev.
Çocuk kendi kendine giyindi.
The child got dressed by him/herself.
Doubled form kendi kendine = «on one's own / by oneself». The dative -e on the second kendi is fixed in this idiom.
Birbirimizi yıllardır tanıyoruz.
We have known each other for years.
Reciprocal, 1st pl.: birbiri- + -miz (1st pl. possessive) + -i (accusative) → birbirimizi.
Birbirine yardım ettiler.
They helped each other.
Reciprocal, 3rd pl.: birbiri- + -ne (dative) → birbirine. The verb yardım etmek takes the dative, so birbiri takes the dative too.

common pitfalls

  • Bare kendi as a reflexive object — kendi alone cannot act as an object. It needs a possessive suffix and then the appropriate case suffix. *Kendi gördüm is wrong; the correct form is kendimi gördüm.

  • Mixing up adjectival «own» and emphatic «myself» — in kendi evim («my own house»), kendi modifies the noun and the possessive sits on the noun. In evi kendim aldım («I bought the house myself»), kendim is a standalone emphatic pronoun in the nominative. Do not swap the two patterns.

  • Reaching for verb suffixes instead of the pronoun — Turkish does have reflexive (-(I)n) and reciprocal (-(I)ş) verb suffixes, but they form a closed set of lexicalised verbs and do not productively translate «myself» or «each other». For the meanings covered here, always use kendi or birbiri with a plain verb.

  • Wrong case or spurious plural on birbiri — always match the case to what the verb requires: accusative (birbirini), dative (birbirine), ablative (birbirinden), etc. Do not add a separate plural marker: *birbirleri is not standard. Plurality is expressed through the possessive: birbirimizi (us), birbirinizi (you all).
